Heritage to Legacy

My Heritage and My Legacy

I am setting out to make my own research available to those who may be assisted along their own path

If only I had known.

When I started researching my own family history, I had lots of info about little pockets of knowledge; a bit about this person and quite a bit more about another.  Once I had begun, I discovered that there was a huge range of information that I didn’t know about.  I also found that after a while, I had been starting at a point a long way behind the starting line, as there were other people who had already ‘done’ that area, and who were willing to share if only I had known.

Resetting the starting line.

And so, I am resetting the starting line, for all those who also are seeking information.  This is my way of ‘paying – forward’ the wonderful assistance and aid that has been extended to me,  and so that the next person doesn’t have to cover ground that has already been dealt with.

We seek knowledge of our past for many reasons, various causes and diverse interests. I have found myself often diverging from the narrow path of the traditional format of  genealogy. I wanted to know about brothers and sisters, new wives/husbands and their children;  where they lived and who with, and what they were doing; finding the similarities of my own genetic inheritances of attitudes, traditions, approaches to life and myriads of other nuances of myself.  This is my own heritage and also my legacy.

I have always loved history – it is a wonderful tool to use to understand where we are now, and perhaps to gauge how we may approach our own paths.   It is also  quite dependent on our own attitudes as to how we write it.  Do we apply our own rules and codes of conduct on someone who was living their lives in circumstances we can only imagine?  And if we are biased, do we not tell our stories with a bias?  History cannot do its job of recording facts unless the recorder is dispassionate to a degree. So while I am passionate about the accuracy of the  facts, I am also striving to offer my own point of view of the circumstances with as much wisdom and tolerance and understanding  that I can muster.

Accuracy

At each point I will define the entry’s source point, and the verifications for cross-checking and reference.  There will be times when extra information will be given and at all times I will strive to acknowledge sources and reasons.

There will also be provided an access point  for comments and questions, which are always welcome.  If there are any errors I trust I will be enlightened,  for only this will serve our following generations..
